Strengthening Our Accounting Team: Leadership Updates and New Additions

Three cheers for Liz, Yvonne, Victoria,
and Tammy!

UVA Finance is pleased to share several important updates within our Accounting team, changes that reflect the department’s continued focus on collaboration, expertise, and excellence in financial stewardship.

Congratulations to Liz Vlahos, who has been promoted to Director of Accounting. Liz has been an integral member of the Accounting team as a manager, bringing strong leadership and a deep commitment to advancing UVA’s financial stewardship. Before joining the University, Liz served as Assistant Director at the Virginia Department of Accounts, where she gained extensive experience in state-level accounting practices—expertise she continues to apply to her work at UVA. We are excited for the energy and insight she brings to this new role.

We also extend heartfelt thanks to Yvonne Metheny for her outstanding leadership as Director of Accounting. Beginning October 1, Yvonne transitioned into the role of Investment Accounting Program Lead, where she will continue to apply her knowledge and dedication in support of UVA Finance’s mission.

The team is also pleased to welcome two new colleagues who have joined the Accounting area from Payroll:

  • Victoria Peprah-Asante, Accounting Manager, who will lead efforts around payroll accounting improvements, fiscal stewardship, and reconciliations.
  • Tammy Kolotkin, Senior Financial Analyst, who will support this important work alongside Victoria.

Please join us in congratulating Liz, Yvonne, Victoria, and Tammy as they begin these new chapters. These transitions strengthen our Accounting team and position UVA Finance well for the work ahead.

Enhancements in Workday Finance

R2 Enhancements are here!
On September 21, Workday released its latest set of enhancements to the Finance system. Workday follows a biannual release cycle, typically in March and September, with additional weekly updates for fixes and smaller improvements. Each release incorporates customer feedback and delivers new features, enhancements, and AI-powered tools across both the Human Capital Management and Financials modules. The focus is always on streamlining processes and improving the overall user experience.

This most recent release is all about convenience, adding tools that make routine tasks easier, provide better visibility into transactions, and save you time. None of these changes alter your core workflows, but they do give you more efficient ways to get work done.

AI Prompt Recommendations for Payroll Accounting

In the assign costing allocations and create payroll accounting adjustments tasks, you’ll now see a new “Recommended” option in several fields (such as costing company, earning, position restriction, worker, change reason, and employee). Choosing this option provides up to five prompts based on your frequent usage, helping you complete these tasks more quickly and with fewer clicks.

Current Accounting for Gross-to-Net Pay Result

You can now view all journal lines affecting a pay result in one place — including adjustments made after the pay period was completed and processed. This consolidated view eliminates the need for multi-step reporting, presenting both the original journal lines and subsequent adjustment lines together. Journal types included are Actuals and Payroll Accounting Adjustments.

Costing Source for Payroll Accounting Journal Lines

A new Costing Source column displays on Actuals, Current Accounting, and Forward Accruals journals. This gives you immediate visibility into the costing allocations that generated payroll accounting journal lines, making it easier to trace, audit, and understand complex distributions without running additional reports.

Customer Accounts Hub

The new Customer Accounts Hub offers one-stop access to many of the most used customer account tasks and reports. The hub is personalized to you — it only displays the tasks and reports you already have permission to access, so you can navigate faster and more confidently. (Image to be included in article)

Revenue Hub

Similarly, Workday now delivers a Revenue Hub, providing a centralized location for Customer Account Contracts tasks and report. Like the Customer Accounts Hub, this hub adapts to your permissions, showing only what you have access to, and making it simpler to find what you need in one place. (Image to be included in article)

Looking Ahead: Videos on the Horizon

These enhancements are designed to give you better visibility and quicker access to information so you can spend less time hunting for details and more time focusing on your work. And there’s more support on the way: the Finance Training team will soon be sharing short videos to walk you through these new features in action. Watch this space for more information!

Introducing Procurement Transformation at UVA

Modernizing our Procurement Function

At UVA, procurement is more than purchasing goods and services; it’s a vital part of advancing our mission in education, research, and healthcare. To better serve that mission, we’ve launched Procurement Transformation, a strategic realignment to create a smarter, more connected procurement ecosystem.

This initiative is about more than just technology. It’s about reducing manual processes, increasing transparency, and creating a seamless experience for both our colleagues across Grounds and suppliers. By modernizing how UVA sources, contracts, and partners with suppliers, we unlock time and resources that can be directed to advancing the University’s mission.

Our Goal

This transformation positions Procurement Services as a trusted partner across Grounds. We aim to deliver a seamless procurement journey, from sourcing to payment. Through updates to our team structure, technology, and end-to-end processes, we’re setting UVA procurement up for long-term success and resiliency.

What’s Happening Now

Procurement Transformation preparatory work has been underway this summer:

  • Team updates: Procurement Services has a new structure, with team members stepping into new roles to better support UVA’s buying needs.  Read more about the team changes
  • Infrequent Payee Pilot: We’ve launched a pilot process to simplify how occasional or one-time payees are managed. Once complete, we’ll share the results with finance partners across Grounds.
  • Technology improvements: Workday Strategic Sourcing is next on the horizon, with guided buying and supplier onboarding coming soon. The project team is looking forward to continuing to engage with our partners across Grounds as we make progress on this next phase of transformation.
  • Website launch: A new website is underway to provide a one-stop hub for project details, resources, and updates.

Looking Ahead

We recognize that change can raise questions, especially with many initiatives happening across UVA. The goal of Procurement Transformation is simple: to improve the procurement process from start to finish and leverage UVA’s buying power more effectively.

This is about creating a procurement experience that is modern, people-centered, and mission-driven. We’ll share updates regularly as the project progresses this fall and winter, and we invite you to join us on this journey toward a smarter, more connected UVA procurement future.

Getting grubby for a good cause!

UVAFinance Supports Day of Caring

On September 17, members of the UVAFinance Team joined volunteers from across the area for the United Way of Greater Charlottesville’s 34th Annual Day of Caring. Our team members rolled up their sleeves to support projects in local nonprofits, schools, and community organizations: a meaningful reminder of the impact we can make when we step outside our daily routines and give back together.  Thank you to everyone who participated!  See the rest of the pictures on Flickr.

Congrats, Amanda!
Amanda Meares Chosen as NACUBO Emerging Leader

Amanda Meares, Finance Manager in UVAFinance, has been selected as a participant in the 2025–26 NACUBO Emerging Leaders Program!

Meares joined UVAFinance in 2023 as a Senior Financial Reporting Analyst and was soon promoted to Finance Manager. In this role, she has been integral to advancing UVAFinance’s goals and supporting UVA’s mission, working closely with University leadership on priority projects while also collaborating with stakeholder groups like the Finance Advisory Network (FAN). Her work ensures that our financial systems and strategies not only run smoothly but also enable the University to deliver on its mission of education, research, and service.

The NACUBO Emerging Leaders Program, now in its fifth year, equips promising mid-level managers with the skills to strengthen leadership abilities, foster cross-campus collaboration, and expand professional networks. This year’s cohort is the largest yet, with 78 participants representing 69 higher education institutions across 31 states and D.C.

Thank you, Chris!
Peper to be Interim Leader of Financial Planning & Analysis

As Katie Walker, Associate Vice President and Chief Budget Officer, departs UVA to take on her new role as Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at Indiana University Bloomington, we are pleased to announce that Chris Peper will lead the Office of Financial Planning and Analysis in the interim while a search for Walker’s successor is underway.

Prior to that role, he was Senior Director of Finance in the School of Education and Human Development, where he built strong partnerships and deep knowledge of UVA’s academic operations.

UVAFinance appreciates Peper stepping into this interim leadership role and continuing the important work of supporting UVA’s mission through thoughtful planning and analysis.

Tech Tips from our LSPs: Data Do’s and Don’ts for AI

Protect UVA's Data when Using AI

When it comes to using AI tools, data safety is non-negotiable. Think of it like this: if you wouldn’t post it on a public website, don’t paste it into an AI prompt.

UVA’s licensed Generative AI tools (Copilot Chat and Copilot for Microsoft 365) include contractual data protection of university information. With appropriately licensed tools, “Sensitive” data may be used in chat prompts. “Highly Sensitive” data, as explicitly defined in the University Data Protection Standards, cannot be included in chat prompts.

UVA staff can use an approved, licensed version of Microsoft’s CoPilot. All info about Microsoft CoPilot at UVA and a form to submit a request for a license can be found here

 Do:

  • Use AI with information that is general, public, or non-sensitive
  • Share outlines, drafts, or generic text for editing or brainstorming
  • Ask AI for help with style, formatting, or idea-generation
  • Use Caution with names, numbers, or details ( strip them out or replace them with placeholders if you’re testing an idea).)
Don’t:
  • Enter restricted or confidential University data (budgets, salaries, grades, health records, SSNs, etc.).
  • Paste in drafts of sensitive reports, agreements, or contracts.
  • Upload or copy/paste emails that include private or identifiable details.
  • Assume the tool is “private” (many AI systems store prompts for training or troubleshooting).
Treat AI like an external consultant. Share what helps you get useful results, but never what could put UVA Finance’s data or reputation at risk.

Logan Hobbs
Logan Hobbs Helps International Students Navigate Tax Questions

Starting at a new university can be daunting—especially when it involves navigating a new country’s requirements and systems. At UVA’s International Orientation this fall, nearly 1,000 new international undergraduate and graduate students were welcomed to Grounds. Among the many University resources on hand was UVAFinance’s own Logan Hobbs, Compliance Manager in Financial Operations & Tax.

Hobbs set up a table alongside Student Health, the University Police Department, the Lorna Sundberg International Student Center, and the Honor Committee to offer guidance on tax matters. His expertise proved valuable, as he answered questions for 50–60 students during each session, while many others stopped by to pick up flyers and resources to review later.

By providing this kind of one-on-one support, Hobbs demonstrates how UVAFinance plays a vital role in helping students succeed from the very beginning of their UVA journey.

Harmonizing People and Process: Introducing Holly Bolton

This city girl is rediscovering her roots

As a a student, Holly Bolton dreamed of life on the stage as an opera singer. Though her path shifted, she never lost her voice: it simply took on a different form. Today, she uses it to shape teams, strengthen organizations, and create spaces where people can do their best work.

That voice has guided her through a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from New Jersey City University and more than 15 years of leadership roles in higher education. Most recently, she served as Chief of Staff to both the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at New York University, where she led cross-functional teams, advised senior leadership, managed operations for more than 1,600 employees, and championed inclusion efforts.

Now, Bolton brings her experience and energy to UVA as Assistant Vice President and Chief of Staff to the Chief Financial Officer. She’s eager to provide structure and clarity in ways that help others thrive, ensuring that UVAFinance is not only respected as a partner across Grounds but is also a place where colleagues feel included, supported, and empowered to do their best work.

Just a few weeks into her new role, Bolton is enjoying being on the UVAFinance Team.  “I like the people and their willingness to just jump right in,” she says. “Everyone wants to be of help, and there are no big egos.”

As Bolton enjoys the collaborative, servant-leader spirit she’s found here, she’s also adjusting to life in Charlottesville and rediscovering her Southern roots (she has two bachelor’s degrees, one from Auburn University and another from the University of Alabama at Birmingham).  One of the biggest transitions, she says, is navigating the transition from city sidewalks to car commutes.

Outside of work, she loves exploring off-the-beaten-path places and finding hidden gems, getting outdoors on her bike, and immersing herself in the fantastical worlds of sci-fi and Marvel stories.  “My movie interest is that of a teenage boy,” she laughs.

We’re grateful to have Holly as part of the team and look forward to her using her influence to harmonize people, processes, and possibilities.

Building on Experience: Mike Priddy Joins UVA Finance in a New Role

The Priddy Family

The Workday Support Team is pleased to welcome Mike Priddy to the team!

Priddy has built his career here at UVA, previously working in the Office of Sponsored Programs, where he supported the University in areas such as research administration and financial compliance. His experience in that role, along with similar exposure during his 11 years in corporate America, sparked an interest in data and analytics and drew him to this new opportunity. Having worked with the team in the past, he is glad to return in a new capacity where he can contribute to the culture and community he knows well.

In his new position, Priddy is eager to be an asset to the team by applying careful analysis and problem-solving to improve UVA’s financial systems and processes. He is looking forward to making an impact that reaches across the University, strengthening the systems that support students, faculty, and sponsored programs on a large scale.

Outside of work, Priddy spends time with his community and family. He coaches two travel basketball teams and serves as an assistant coach for a local high school golf team, finding joy in mentoring young athletes. His commitment to youth extends beyond the court as he has helped run a nonprofit for more than three years that introduces local kids to golf, called Fore The Valley. At home, Priddy and his wife, Erika, are raising three children who each pursue their own passions in music, acting, singing, scouting, and sports. The family also has two dogs: one named Hatch, after the famous Hatch green chili pepper, and the other named Carl.

We are glad to have Priddy on the team and look forward to all he will bring to UVA Finance.

Andrew Sallans Completes Cornerstone Program with Practical Results for the School of Data Science

Sallans was part of the 10th
Cohort of the Cornerstone Program

This fall, Andrew Sallans wrapped up a yearlong journey as part of the University of Virginia’s Cornerstone Program, a leadership development initiative launched in 2014 to prepare emerging leaders for the challenges of tomorrow. Sallans was part of the program’s 10th cohort, which will officially graduate on September 30.

Cornerstone is designed to help participants grow through 360 feedback, one-on-one mentoring, monthly classroom sessions, and, perhaps most importantly, collaborative team projects. These projects bring together participants from across UVA to tackle a real organizational need and present their findings to leadership.

For Sallans, that project was with UVA’s newest school: the School of Data Science (SDS). Alongside his teammates Jennett Murphy (Batten School of Leadership & Public Policy) and Bob Jones (ITS), Andrew set out to explore how SDS could better support its international scholars (a group that includes postdocs, graduate students, and faculty) navigating the unique challenges of studying and working in a new country.

“It’s a highly competitive space,” Sallans explains. “Data science scholars are in demand, and they expect a high level of support. Everything from signing a lease to getting a driver’s license can feel overwhelming in an unfamiliar environment and can become a barrier to attracting top talent.”

The team’s original plan to interview international scholars was complicated by external factors, including changes in federal policy. The team regrouped and pivoted to a landscape survey, mapping out what resources already exist at UVA (like visa services from the International Studies Office or integration support from the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs), identifying gaps (such as housing assistance), and creating a practical resource guide that SDS can immediately put to use.

The result? A deliverable with real staying power. The School of Data Science is incorporating the guide into its operations, and Sallans sees potential for broader impact: “This could easily be something that other schools use. There’s never been a centralized guide like this, and it might even spark a community of practice across UVA to support international students and scholars.”

That kind of ripple effect is exactly what the Cornerstone Program aims for: preparing leaders not only to think strategically, but also to deliver meaningful results that benefit the broader University community.

Please join us in congratulating Andrew on completing the Cornerstone Program and on leaving behind a resource that will make UVA a more welcoming place for international scholars.

UVA One Stop: One Place, ALL Answers

The One Stop Team

Contributed by Student Financial Services

Ever thought how wonderful it would be for students and their families to have one number to call to get their admission, student finance, and student records questions answered? Well, we did too. And that’s what we did!

UVA One Stop launched August 25th as the single go-to spot for all questions about Undergraduate Admission, Student Financial Services, and UREG. Goodbye multiple calls and emails! We’ve got it covered in one location. Special thanks go out to Joey Carls and his team as well as Jamie Reid, Ben Tolson, and Andrew Sallans for their amazing help in getting this launched! We could not have done it without your partnership!

Current, admitted, and future students, as well as UVA family members and UVA alumni, now have a single source of help that’s easy to find and quick to access. The One Stop is on the lower level of Carruthers Hall (1001 N. Emmet Street), across from Barracks Road Shopping Center, and is accessible via the Gold Line University bus route. We hope to move the One Stop to central Grounds at some point so the team can be even more accessible for students.

Meet Trina Mallory: UVA’s New Treasury Administrator

That's Trina in the middle!
Trina Mallory, a native Virginian, has been part of UVA since 2013. She started her career with the University at UPG, and after working there for ten years, she moved over to the Undergraduate Admission Office and recently stepped into the role as Treasurer Administrator in May.

Mallory has always been drawn to finance because she wanted a role that let her dive deeper into the field.

“I enjoy getting exposure to areas like cash management, asset management, and debt management. It is helping me build a broader understanding of finance,” she says.

Mallory earned her Associate’s in Accounting from PVCC. She never imagined she would end up in Treasury, but thanks to mentors and colleagues who believed in her, she decided to go for it.

Although she is still new, Mallory enjoys the team she is working with and is looking forward to getting more hands-on experience.

Outside of work, Mallory enjoys traveling and dining out with her daughter. She is a proud mom of four, and her children are now in college or starting their careers. Mallory loves exploring local restaurants and recently traveled to the Dominican Republic, a trip she hopes to take again soon. We are excited to welcome Trina Mallory to the Treasury team!

Professional Development Corner: August 28, 2025

Remember to discuss all professional development
opportunities with your manager prior to applying
for any funds. See below for more information
on the Education Benefit.

Why is professional development important?

Professional development offers a valuable opportunity to stay engaged and navigate the constantly changing landscape of Higher Education and beyond. Whether you’re looking to learn new skills, sharpen existing ones, enhance your leadership abilities, explore new interests, stay on top of emerging trends, or simply connect with colleagues, there’s something for everyone.

Check out this article from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, How Professional Development Can Boost Employee Engagement on how participating in learning activities benefits all.

Tips for Supporting Others in Professional Development

Last month’s newsletter focused on Making Time for Professional Development (even when you’re busy). This month, we’re shifting to tips for developing others. If you’re a UVAFinance manager, the topic may sound familiar since we recently explored it in a workshop. While these tips are written with managers and their direct reports in mind, anyone may find opportunities to support a colleague’s growth. You can even apply these same tips when planning your own development.

  1. Know their goals, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. Discuss career goals and professional interests frequently.  Use assessments, such as DISC or 360s, feedback, or observations to help identify what they do best.
  2. Give clear, specific, timely, and constructive feedback. Be sure to provide guidance on opportunities for growth and development, as well as praise and recognition.
  3. Create development opportunities. Delegate stretch assignments that build skills, encourage cross-training, and support attendance at workshops, courses, or conferences.
  4. Be a coach. Shift from a “telling” style to a “coaching” style. Instead of directing or providing solutions, ask guiding questions like “What options to do you see?” or “How might you approach this differently?” Remember that sometimes listening is more powerful than advising.
  5. Recognize and celebrate progress and achievements. Small steps forward can be a reason to celebrate. Know how individuals prefer to be recognized. Public recognition can motivate, and private recognition can build trust, but it’s more important to treat others as THEY want to be treated. (Remember the DISC Platinum rule?) Submit recognition for Quarterly Wins.
  6. Adopt and role-model a growth mindset. Treat mistakes as learning opportunities and encourage persistence and curiosity rather than perfection. (See earlier versions of the Professional Development Corner newsletter for some articles on the importance of adopting a growth mindset.)

Professional Development Opportunities

We’re pleased to share information about a variety of workshops, courses, and resources to support your ongoing growth—wherever your journey leads. While some opportunities are free and others may have a fee, most do not require travel, aside from a few UVA programs that may involve local travel.  Please feel free to share other opportunities you come across, and I’ll include them in future communications!

Coursera

Professional Development Request Form

UVAFinance team members –please discuss with your manager and use the Professional Development Request Form before you register for any program. Remember, not all professional development opportunities require submission of the form. If an opportunity is less than ½ day AND there is no cost associated with it, then do not submit a form. Many LinkedIn Learning courses and some courses offered by UVA Human Resources or other UVA departments meet these criteria. Otherwise, the form must be submitted. If unsure, feel free to ask!

UVAFinance In Action: August 28, 2025

Katie Walker
Katie Walker to Join Indiana University as Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration

Katie Walker, our Associate Vice President and Chief Budget Officer, has accepted a new role as Vice Chancellor for Finance & Administration at Indiana University Bloomington. While her leadership will certainly be missed here at UVA, we are excited to celebrate this next step in her career.

Since joining UVA in 2021 as Executive Director of Financial Planning & Analysis, Walker has made a lasting impact. She played a key role in advancing the Finance Strategic Transformation project, guiding fiscal strategy, multi-year planning, and enterprise initiatives with insight and care.

Her leadership trajectory at UVA has been marked by excellence: promoted to Assistant Vice President and then to Associate Vice President, Walker was also recognized nationally with NACUBO’s Rising Star Award. She has generously shared her expertise across the higher education community while serving as a trusted partner to the Board of Visitors, faculty, staff, and students.

Walker will continue at UVA for the next month as we finalize transition plans. We will share updates soon regarding interim leadership and any adjustments to ongoing initiatives.

Please join us in expressing gratitude to Walker for her extraordinary contributions to UVA Finance and in wishing her every success in this exciting new role.

No Tax on Overtime: Key Facts

Click the image for a larger view

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed on July 4, 2025, included a “No Tax on Overtime” provision that affects employees who earn overtime pay.  This does not change how overtime is paid or taxed on paychecks, but it may reduce taxable income on annual tax returns.

Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • The deduction is effective for calendar years 2025 through 2028.
  • The deduction applies to UVA’s hourly employees who work over 40 hours per week.
  • Only the “half-time” portion of overtime pay qualifies for the deduction.
  • Straight time pay during holidays or PTO does not qualify for the deduction.

Let our Payroll Team know if you have questions; we’re happy to help!

UVA’s Purchasing Decisions Support Small and Local Businesses

In FY25, 29.2% of the university's discretionary purchases were with small businesses. That’s $287.7 million going directly to small businesses that help our community thrive.

In that same period, 18.8% of discretionary purchases, or $176.1 million, were with local businesses in Charlottesville, as well as the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson.

We appreciate the thoughtful buying choices the University Community makes every day.  Thank you for helping us prioritize small and local suppliers!

If you’d like to learn more about your school or unit’s small and local business spend, or ways to grow those partnerships, reach out to our Supplier Engagement team in Procurement Services via askfinance@virginia.edu.  We’re happy to help!
