UVASustainability: Break Up with your K-Cups

Take a moment to think about how you prepare your coffee in the morning. For many of us, it involves a single-use plastic coffee K-Cup. The routine is quick and familiar, almost as if we are on autopilot. Over time, those small moments add up, and so does the plastic waste they generate across Grounds.
This February, UVA Sustainability is inviting employees to consider switching to reusable cups or other low-waste coffee options.
Choosing reusable or low-waste options can help reduce plastic waste on Grounds, save money, and support the University’s sustainability goals.
As a thank you, participants will be entered to win a sustainable coffee kit for their workplace.

Capital Equipment Threshold Increasing to $10,000

From $5,000 to $10,000

Beginning July 1, 2026, UVAFinance will increase the dollar threshold used to define Capital Equipment from $5,000 to $10,000. The Equipment Trust Fund (ETF) threshold will also increase to $10,000, aligning the two standards.

This update reflects changes in purchasing costs over time and helps ensure that capital accounting practices remain practical and consistent across the University.

What Qualifies as Capital Equipment?

With the updated threshold in place, an asset must meet all of the following criteria to be classified as Capital Equipment:

  • Cost of $10,000 or more: The total cost of the asset must meet or exceed the new $10,000 threshold.
  • Useful life greater than one year: The asset must be expected to remain in service for more than one year.
  • Functionality: The asset must be:
    • Functional on its own, or
    • Functional as part of a larger, identifiable functional unit.
  • Purchased as a unit: The asset must be purchased from a supplier as a complete unit. Exception: Assets that are approved in advance as a fabrication may be constructed from multiple components.

Assets that do not meet all of these requirements will continue to be treated as non-capital equipment.

What’s Not Changing

While the dollar threshold is increasing, the underlying principles of capitalization remain the same. Reviews for useful life, functionality, and purchasing structure will continue to play a key role in determining how equipment is classified and recorded.

Planning Ahead

Departments planning equipment purchases for FY27 and beyond should take note of the new threshold when budgeting, purchasing, and preparing for asset review. Additional guidance and updated resources will be shared as we approach the July 1, 2026 effective date.

Questions? The Accounting and Financial Reporting team is happy to help clarify how this change may apply to specific purchases.  Contact us at askfinance@virginia.edu

Noah Winfield Joins UVA Finance as Senior Accounting Analyst

Noah (red scarf) and his brother

Noah Winfield joins UVAFinance as a Senior Accounting Analyst, bringing both accounting experience and a personal connection to Charlottesville, where he grew up just ten minutes from Grounds. Working at UVA feels familiar to him, and he shares that the University has always been a steady presence in his life and in the surrounding community.

Winfield began his academic journey at Piedmont Virginia Community College, where he studied business administration. Through conversations with professors, he developed an interest in accounting. He later transferred to James Madison University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting.

Before coming to UVAFinance, Winfield worked at an accounting firm as a staff auditor. There, he worked with a variety of organizations, including nonprofits and colleges, which gave him insight into how universities operate before joining one from the inside.

In his current role at UVAFinance, Winfield handles account reconciliations and supports UVAHealth's transition to Workday. His day-to-day work involves checking and reconciling financial data to ensure accurate information flows between systems.

One change he has especially appreciated is the shift in work-life balance. In his previous role, busy seasons often meant long weeks and extended hours. At UVA, he enjoys a more balanced schedule while still feeling challenged by his work.

Outside the office, Winfield enjoys watching sports and is a longtime Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He has recently picked up tennis and is looking forward to spending more time on the court as the weather warms up. In his free time, he also enjoys reading science fiction for its creativity and imagination.
Looking ahead, Winfield is excited to meet new people and become more connected within the UVAFinance community.

Meet Kelli Huffer: Bringing Healthcare Contract Expertise to UVA Finance

The Huffer Family
We are pleaed to welcome Kelli Huffer as she joins UVA Finance as a Senior Procurement Contract Specialist. She brings a deep understanding of University operations shaped by her time at UVA Health. She often describes her career as beginning at the front door.

Huffer began her career in 2015 as a patient relations advocate in the emergency department at UVA Hospital. In that role, she addressed patient concerns in real time by anticipating delays and working closely with staff to communicate updates before issues arose. As a patient relations advocate, she developed an interest in hospital operations. She later became a neuroscience administrative specialist and project manager, serving on the SAVE Task Force and supporting badge access and metal detector implementation during emergency department renovations.

From there, she transitioned into contract negotiation and supply chain at UVA Health, eventually serving as a senior contract negotiator. In that role, she supported mergers and acquisitions efforts, helping onboard three community hospitals into UVA Health by aligning contracts and standardizing purchasing systems. Over time, she developed a focus in pharmaceutical supply chain contracting and became the senior negotiator for enterprise pharmacy across UVA Health. That work became her niche and an area she particularly enjoyed.

Now at UVAFinance, Huffer has found the Procurement team to be welcoming and collaborative and appreciates the clear structure that guides contract work in the academic environment. She looks forward to expanding her understanding of higher education operations.

Outside of work, Huffer is a wife and a mom of three. She and her husband have been foster parents for several years, and two of their children joined the family through foster care adoption. She enjoys staying involved in her kids’ activities, including supporting her oldest child’s high school band as a band booster.

Huffer spends much of her free time outdoors, whether gardening, reading, or simply being outside with her family and two dogs. She recently began using a greenhouse to experiment with sustainable food growing and enjoys learning what works through each season.

As she settles into her role at UVA Finance, Huffer is looking forward to continuing her work in procurement and contract support while growing alongside a team that values collaboration, structure, and shared purpose.

New Payroll Resources to Help You Understand Your W-2

New W-2 Resources on the Payroll Site!

As tax season gets underway, many employees may take a closer look at their W-2 forms and realize they have questions. To help make sense of it all, our Payroll team has created two new resources designed to walk you through what you’re seeing and why.

How Do I Read My W-2?
This guide offers a box-by-box walkthrough of the W-2 form itself. It explains what each section represents and where the information comes from, helping you understand how to read the form once you have it in hand.

Understanding Your W-2: A Tip Sheet
If you’ve ever wondered why the wage amounts on your W-2 don’t exactly match your final pay stub for the year, this resource is for you. This tip sheet explains how W-2 wages are calculated, including how pre-tax deductions and other factors can affect what appears on the form.
👉 Understanding Your W-2: A Tip Sheet (on the UVAFinance website)

Together, these resources are meant to take some of the mystery out of W-2s and provide helpful context as you prepare your taxes. Both documents are now available on the Payroll page of our website, and we encourage you to take a look and/or share them with a colleague who might find them useful.
