Meet Margaret Derdeyn, Senior Compliance Analyst

Please join us in welcoming Margaret Derdeyn to UVA Finance as our new Senior Compliance Analyst.

Originally from St. Louis, Derdeyn earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and English from the University of Notre Dame before completing her Master of Accounting at the University of Iowa. She then spent nearly five years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where she specialized in internal audit consulting and internal controls.

While accounting provided a practical career path, Derdeyn never let go of her passion for reading and writing. 

"I've always loved books," she says. "Studying English alongside accounting gave me a creative balance and made college even more enjoyable."

After beginning her career during the COVID-19 pandemic, Derdeyn developed a greater appreciation for collaboration and the relationships built through working alongside colleagues, making UVA's hybrid work environment especially appealing.

Her decision to join UVA Finance was both professional and personal. With strong family ties to the University and previous experience working in higher education at the University of Iowa, Derdeyn always hoped to return to a university setting. 

"I loved working at a university because you really feel like you're part of the community," she says."When we decided to move to Charlottesville, joining UVA felt like the perfect opportunity."

In her new role, Derdeyn is looking forward to collaborating with colleagues across the University, learning about the many departments that support UVA, and helping improve processes through a risk and compliance perspective.

Outside of work, Derdeyn enjoys reading, spending time with her dog, Sadie, and exploring local wineries. She and her fiancé are also preparing for their wedding next summer as they settle into Charlottesville.
